瓊斯於1899年7月1日出生於新英格蘭，父親為蘇格蘭裔中世紀文獻學家，受其影響而對歷史產生興趣。他在芝加哥大學學習考古學，擁有博士頭銜，冒險生涯之外，其正式身份為風俗學教授和考古學家，能夠使用包括漢語在內的27種語言。

考古學教授印第安那·瓊斯被美國特務詢問起關於聖物法櫃（約櫃），據傳法櫃裡有神祕且令人懼怕的力量；而這神力引起眾人尋找和奪取的慾望，印第安那·瓊斯也加入了這場尋寶爭奪戰。當法櫃被開啟，危險的光芒顯現了未知的能量。



最著名的瓊斯形象來自於首次出現於20世紀80年代的電影，在電影三部曲1981《法櫃奇兵》、1984《魔宮傳奇》、1989《聖戰奇兵》中，瓊斯由哈里遜·福特主演（少年時期由瑞凡·非尼克斯 River Phoenix 飾演），瓊斯的父親由史恩·康納萊飾演，喬治·盧卡斯編劇、史匹柏導演，為他們均贏得了巨大的聲譽。目前電影系列第4部正在拍攝中，計劃於2008年公映。

星爺2008年自導自演的大片[長江七號]寒假檔期票房果如預期的登上賣座第一,但片中的星爺戲份減少,重點擺在小孩及外星狗'長江七號'身上,搞笑的成分也被溫情系所替代了大半,如果抱著'功夫'或'逃學威龍'等期待心情去的觀眾,恐怕會有些失望!
最讓我這超齡周星馳影迷訝異的是;片中前中後共出現了三次的DISCO時代天團Boney M的經典暢銷曲Sunny,近30年的老歌又再次觸動身體神經,但戲院週遭幾乎是青少年,他們恐怕連Boney M
